Carpet over Middle Tennessee slabs and crawl spaces
Pad is the part nobody shops for and it decides how long the carpet lasts as much as the carpet does. An underspecified pad lets the backing flex and break down, and the carpet wears out in the traffic lanes years early.
Stairs are where carpet installation shows. Wrapped, capped and properly stretched over each nosing is slower and looks it. Loosely laid stair carpet moves underfoot and wears through at the front edge of every tread.

FAQ
Carpet questions, floor by floor
What carpet pad should I use?
A dense rebond pad around 8 lb and 7/16 inch for most bedrooms; firmer and thinner for stairs and under berber. The pad is what makes carpet feel good and last, and it is where the money is quietly saved on a low quote. A thick soft pad under a loop carpet is what makes the seams show and the carpet ripple.
Why does my carpet have ripples?
It was not stretched properly, or it was laid on the wrong pad. Carpet is power-stretched onto tack strip so it stays taut through humidity changes; carpet that was kicked in with a knee kicker relaxes and buckles within a year. Re-stretching is a repair, and it is a common one.
