Tile & Showers over Middle Tennessee slabs and crawl spaces
Cement board is not waterproof. A shower needs a bonded waterproofing membrane or a sheet system behind the tile, and the failures that show up as a stain on the ceiling below almost always trace to that one decision rather than to the tile or the grout.
Slope is what makes a shower floor work. Water has to reach the drain from every point, and a curbless entry raises the difficulty considerably because the slope has to happen within the floor structure rather than above it.

FAQ
Tile & Showers questions, floor by floor
Why do shower tiles crack or come loose?
Movement and water. A shower built without a proper waterproofing system lets water into the wall behind the tile, the substrate swells, and the tile lets go. Cracks along a straight line usually follow a joint in the substrate that was not isolated. A shower is a waterproof box first and a tiled surface second.
How long before a new tile floor or shower can be used?
Grout needs a day or so before foot traffic and longer before a shower is run — the cure is what stops the grout washing out and the sealer failing. The schedule is set by the products, not by the calendar, and a shower used a day early is one that is being re-grouted in a year.
