How do I know if my subfloor needs repair?
Soft or spongy spots, squeaks that move when you walk, a floor that is not level from room to room, and any history of water — a leaking toilet, a dishwasher, a laundry. Under tile, a bad subfloor shows as cracked grout; under vinyl, as bumps. It is found by walking the floor and, where there is a crawl space, by looking from below.
Can squeaky floors be fixed without pulling up the flooring?
Often, yes. Squeaks are boards moving on a joist, and from a crawl space they can be shimmed or screwed from below. From above, screws through carpet or a hardwood floor can be set and hidden. Where the subfloor is delaminated or rotten it comes out, and that is a floor-up job.
