The word waterproof on a flooring box refers to the plank itself. A vinyl core does not swell when wet, and that is a real advantage over laminate and wood. It says nothing about where water goes once it is on the floor, which is through the joints, under the planks and into whatever is below. Understanding the difference is what stops a small spill from becoming a subfloor replacement.
Three labels, three claims
Waterproof generally means the plank core is a rigid or flexible vinyl, or a stone-polymer composite, that will not absorb water or change dimension when wet. Water-resistant usually describes laminate or engineered wood with a sealed surface and treated edges that can tolerate surface water for a stated period, often measured in hours, before the core begins to swell. Moisture-tolerant is looser still and typically means the product handles humidity swings rather than standing water.
The test behind the waterproof claim is normally a plank sitting in water. That is a different event from a dishwasher line leaking under a floor for a week, which is the way floors actually get wet.
Where the water goes
Click-lock floors are floating floors. Water on the surface reaches the joints, and while a tight joint slows it down, nothing stops it. It then sits on the underlayment and the subfloor. A vinyl plank above is unharmed. A plywood or OSB subfloor below swells, delaminates and grows mold, and it does all of that out of sight because the waterproof floor on top looks perfect.
This is the specific failure mode in Nashville houses over crawl spaces, where the subfloor is already carrying summer humidity from below. A leak from above, hidden under a waterproof floor, can go unnoticed until the floor develops a soft spot or the smell arrives.

Where each product belongs
A genuinely waterproof vinyl plank suits bathrooms, laundries, mudrooms and basements, provided the perimeter and penetrations are sealed so water on the floor cannot get under it at the edges. Water-resistant laminate suits kitchens and living areas where spills are wiped rather than left, and it should stay out of full bathrooms.
Engineered hardwood belongs in living spaces and is the wrong answer for any room with a floor drain, a tub or a washing machine. Solid hardwood is more forgiving than its reputation suggests for a wiped spill and far less forgiving of a slow leak, which cups it permanently.
The slab, the crawl space, and moisture from below
None of these labels address vapor coming up through a concrete slab or a vented crawl space, and that is the moisture most likely to reach a Nashville floor. A waterproof plank on a wet slab traps the moisture beneath it and the adhesive or the underlayment fails. The correct answer is a moisture test on the slab and a proper vapor retarder, and over a crawl space, a floor system that is not sitting on a damp subfloor to begin with.
Ask any installer how they intend to handle moisture from below before the discussion gets to the product. The floor is the last layer, and it is the least important one for keeping the house dry.
